If one, single thing characerizes Barcelona, it is the distinctive modernist architecture, a movement started near the end of the 19th century. Its greatest messanger to the world was Antoni Gaudí, the architectu now known for residences such as Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera) and other structures, all lush sensory experiences. Gaudí´s talent culminated in the design that now defines Sagrada Familia. Though the project originally started with aonther architect in 1882 and Gaudí was brought on in 1883. He went on to dedicate his life to the project until his death in 1926, even living on the Cathedral grounds the last several years. Since 1952, several other architects have been assigned to help continue the project keeping Gaudí´s original vision in mind, with an immense amount of help from individual and corporate donations. The project, still unfinished, is scheduled to complete construction in 2025.

In 2012, Pope Benedict consecrated the church as a basilica and in 2012, Sagrada Familia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Milliions of tourists visit the building every year to witness the imaginative and flamboyant architecture, both inside, out, and even from some of the building´s many towers.
