Dreams, Art and Life in Barcelona

Design, creativity, art – all these things are among the first ones you think about when talking about Barcelona. People who come to the city for some days, and stay in some of its hotels or boutique apartments, also do it because of Barcelona’s famous creative spirit.

From the beginning of the 19th century Barcelona has been a focus for artists, who came here attracted by the Mediterranean light and joy. Just as important was of course the fact that Barcelona has a lot of great art schools, and many potential buyers of art works.

Among the best-known artists whose lives are linked to Barcelona are Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. Surrealism was always very strong on the Iberian Peninsula. It also had a prominent place in Barcelona’s creative panorama. Of course, it was not only men, but also women, whose artistic work was inspired by Catalonia, and by Barcelona in particular.

In order to pay tribute to these female creators, the Mayoral Gallery has decided to organize a special exhibition. In mid-January 2017, the well-known Barcelona art space inaugurated the retrospective “Surrealist women and their connection with Catalonia”. Among the artists featured at the exhibition are such well-known names as Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller and Dora Maar. In addition, Mayoral Gallery also presents works by Valentine Hugo, Maruja Mallo, Remedios Varo, Ángeles Ángeles and Leonora Carrington – all of them creative minds whose artistic quest was influenced by contacts with Barcelona and Catalonia.

Quite untypically for private art galleries, in this case the great part of the works exhibited are not for sale. Apparently, its current owners are very well aware of the exceptional artistic value of these paintings, drawings and photographs.

The works that visitors can see at the exhibition are inspiring, suggestive and sometimes provocative. In any case, we are talking about absolutely exceptional pieces of art. The fact that the Mayoral Gallery pays tribute to the surrealist female artists once again recalls the incredible breadth of attractions you can find in Barcelona. Both residents and travelers staying in boutique apartments can be sure: it never gets boring here.
