Patatas bravas at Bar Tomás of Sarrià

The Best “Patatas Bravas” in Barcelona

The “patatas bravas” (literally “bravo, potatoes!”) are one of the most esteemed tapas here in Catalonia. Traditionally, they consist of small wedges or cubes of potatoes sautéed with alioli, a mayonnaise-like sauce, and a slightly spicy tomato and garlic based sauce called salsa brava. While there are many variations of this dish now found around the world, a hometown favourite is those of Bar Tomás in the Sarria neighbourhood. Bar Tomas has been around for over 50 years and has an extremely loyal client following.  Unas dobles mixtas, or “A mix of the two sauces”, is one of the phrases most frequently overheard here, a way of telling the bartender that you  would like bravas with the traditional toppings. On any given day at Bar Tomás, over 500 portions of this dish will be served. As this little bar can be filled to the brim on some days, many local customers opt to do take-away and bring the patatas bravas to their homes or out on a picnic – if this sounds as good to you as it does to me, keep in mind that there is a 3-portion minimum for take away orders. Wednesdays are the only day that Bar Tomas is closed, but every other day of the week it is open from 12:00 to 4:00pm and from 6:00 to 10:00pm. If you are visiting this city of delights, whether it be for a few days a few weeks or even a few months, stay in one of our apartments in the Sarria neighborhood so you can try these patatas bravas for yourself! How to get to Bar Tomas de Sarriá Bar Tomás is in the center of Calle Sarriá Major in the Sarriá neighborhood at number 49 at just a 5 minute walk from the FFGG Metro stop.
