Discover the “Tapas Route” of Barcelona

They say the best way to get to know a city and its people is to get lost. In Barcelona, the best way to do this is to go on the prowl for tapas! Gastronomy is one of the top reasons for Barcelona continuing to be such a popular destination among international tourists and for good reasons too. It is nothing less than our duty to share with you what we think are the best flavors and foods found among the many restaurants that serve food in the traditional tapas manner. The tapas (or “tapes” in Catalan), are all small plates intended for sharing, and the ones most typically found in Barcelona are patatas bravas (literally translating as “bravo, potatoes!”) and fried calamari, so if you want to feel like a local, go for these.  It is very easy to navigate tapas menus, especially in the parts of town most popular with tourists, with the menu usually translated into English and with English-speaking servers as well. However, the best tapas are not always found in these places – we recommend going for the path slightly less traveled and making your way to Gràcia or Poble Sec to find the city´s most authentic foods.

We at Aspasios recommend these fantastic spots: Tapas 24 This centrally located restaurant, just off of Passeig de Gracia, is small but packs a punch. Be sure to try their famous eggs with Catalan sausage or the bikini sandwich (like a grilled cheese with ham). +34 934 88 09 77 Carrer de la Diputació, 269 (Eixample) La Cova Fumada In the city´s maritime front called Barceloneta, this is one of the city´s cheapest but most delicious. This old wine cellar has been converted into a sit-down joint, where you can get the lauded fresh fish or bombas (literally translating as “bombs”) of fried potatoes. +34 932 21 40 61 Carrer del Baluart, 56 (La Barceloneta) El Quim in the Boquería Market Now and then you can spot celebrity chef Ferran Adrià having a bit here. It is one of the most famous in this historical marketplace. Since there are no reservations, be prepared to wait. +34 933 01 98 10 La Rambla, 91 (Gothic Quarter/El Raval) Bar Tomás This bar is famous for serving the absolute best patatas bravas in the city – they even serve multiple kinds! In the high-end Sarrià, this place puts a new spin on this old dish by serving something closer to French fries served with alioli (a mayonnaise-like sauce) and spicy sauce. +34 932 03 10 77 Calle Major de Sarrià 49 (Sarrià).

We hope you take advantage of this long weekend to try some of these places! Fun fact: Did you know that tapas were originally served as something to be eaten right after work around 6:00pm? The Spanish usually eat full meals later, between 8:00 and 10:00pm.
