Barcelona is a city known for its many festivals. September 24th is approaching fast and with it brings the traditional festival of Barcelona, La Mercè.
The legend goes that in 1687 the Virgin of La Mercè saved Barcelona from a terrible plague of locusts. When the plague finished, the Virgin was declared the patron of the city and in 1902, the first festival was celebrated in her honor.
La Mercè, for more than a century, has been one of the most acclaimed festivals by the citizens of Barcelona. Its traditional, fun and unique character brings together around 1.500.000 to 2.000.000 people from all over the world for all the different cultural, artistic and festive activities.
Throughout the week from the 19th till the 24th of September, the creativity, the diversity, the music, and the participation work together to offer endless activities for all audiences, all of them organised by the Institute of Culture of Barcelona. These activities include performances of giants, castellers, correfocs, sardanas and lots more. And the best thing is that all of them are free!
The music plays a leading and important role during the festival of La Mercé, as Barcelona has always been seen as a city with a varied range of cultural music. This is the reason why the proposal for this year is divided into two. First up, there will be concerts for all audiences, while BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical), a music independent festival welcomes you to the best of Catalan and Spanish musical scenes.
We have to wait until September the 7th to have the final timetable which will let us know about the 600+ activities and performances that will take place in the city of Barcelona.
