Barcelona gastronomy: Helpful hints for foodies

Cosmopolitan, avant-guard, and eclectic, Barcelona is possibly the most high profile of the Spanish cities. From the tapas trail, the modernism of Gaudí, city of Picasso and Miró… it is a dilemma for residents and tourists alike to try and see everything! Barcelona gastronomy, though, cannot be missed.

Where to eat in Barcelona
The tapas trail weaves its way through Barcelona’s most emblematic sights, from the Boquería marketplace to the Gothic Quarter´s winding alleys to the Exiample. Are you ready? Bon appetit! In the Boquería market, you can find one of Barcelona’s most famous tapas bars. It would be a shame to leave this city without trying any of the plates at Bar Pinotxo and El Quim (both at La Rambla, 91 in Gothic Quarter/El Raval). Both are very popular with locals and representative of why the Boquería is held in such high esteem, even with chefs as famous as Ferran Adrià, who said “It is inevitable to not lick your fingers or laugh outloud at the stories of the Pinotxo.”

If your weakness is sweets, however, you must try the unique pastries of famous Chef Oriol Balaguer (+34 932 01 18 46 Plaça de Sant Gregori Taumaturg, 2 in Sant Gervesi). These designer sweets include chocolates that are one-of-a-kind – literally, each one has a distinct recipe!

For tapas that reflect Spain´s role in high-end, contemporary gastronomy, go to Tickets, by Chef Albert Adrià (+34 932 92 42 53 Avinguda Paral·lel, 164 in Parallel). See traditional tapas turned upside-down and backwards through the creative lens of Chef Adrià and his team.

An informal, fun meal can always be found at Bar Mut (+34 932 17 43 38 Calle Pau Claris, 192 in Eixample). The rotating, daily specials can be found on the blackboards hanging on the walls. El Mutis is a secret place, a private club where you can dine or see live music, but only members or invitees of membes are allowed in. Once inside, you feel like you´ve been transported to New York with the low light, button-tufted sofas, and hip ambiance.
