Since 2009 the Barcelona city council has launched an initiative of opening many museums to the public free of charge every Sunday from 15h to 20h. The idea is that over time other centres will join this project. However, some public museums (such as the Ceramic Museum or the Ethnological Museum) still open free of charge only the first Sunday of every month.

Picasso Museum
The museum's permanent collection displays Pablo Picasso’s formative stage, which took place in Barcelona. 3500 of the major works by this artist from Malaga will help you understand the genius of the artist.
The first Sunday of every month admission is free of charge all day long.

Barcelona History Museum
The MUHBA is mainly used to document, investigate and disseminate the history of Barcelona. It also includes an interesting underground tour through the ancient Roman city called Barcino.

Natural Science Museum
It includes the Museum of Geology and Zoology. Its mission is to spread natural sciences in an agreeable and interesting way to the general public.
Free on Sundays from the 1st of April after 15h. The first Sunday of each month admission is free of charge all day long.

Barbier Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian art
Through the collection of this museum, housed in a charming XVth century palace, you can enjoy a journey all along the pre-Columbian American cultures.

Frederic Marès Museum
This outstanding museum presents the unique private collection of sculptor and traveler Frederic Marès, with pieces from ancient times to the 19th century as well as works by the artist. It is located in a beautiful gothic palace with a nice inner yard and a bar.
The museum is closed for renovations until mid-2011.
Admission is also free on Wednesdays from 15h.

Palacio de la Virreina
A space devoted to visual culture. Its activities include photography, audiovisuals, election commercials, book publishing, digital documentation, contemporary essays or literature expanded into the image era.
Here you can also find information on cultural events in Barcelona and a box office where you can get discounted tickets for museums, theatres, concerts and cinema.

Disseny Hub Barcelona
A design centre is divided into four sections: museum, stage, research and action. The museum, that includes the collection of the pre-existing Museums of Decorative Arts, Textile and Clothing and Graphic Arts, presents exhibitions about space, industrial products, visual communications and fashion. Disseny Hub will open its new site in 2012.
The first Sunday of each month the admission is free of charge all day long.

Botanical Garden of Barcelona
A historical and beautiful garden which has been completely renovated in 2003, where you will see 1350 Mediterranean plant species from worldwide. It is located in a privileged location on Montjuïc hill. There are exhibitions and activities aimed to promote knowledge on botany and natural sciences.

Music Museum
Located in L'Auditori, one of the most representative buildings of local contemporary architecture, the excellent museum has a permanent collection that brings together nearly 500 instruments from different eras, a permanent exhibition about the media and an interactive room.

CCCB
The CCCB is a multidisciplinary consortium that works as an exhibition centre, research spot and as a promotional platform of the newest forms of art and contemporary culture. Admission is also free of charge on the first Wednesday of each month.

Maritime Museum
Drassanes Maritime Museum is located in the impressive building of the Royal Shipyards of Barcelona, which between the 13th and 18th centuries was devoted to shipbuilding, and is nowadays the largest gothic building in the world. Its collections reflect the culture of the Mediterranean sea.

MNAC
The National Art Museum of Catalunya, one of the most important museums of Catalunya, located at the impressive National Palace, has a nurtured collection that includes sculptures, paintings, drawings, prints, posters, photographs and coins.
Free admission the first Sunday of every month, the 11th and 24th of September.
18th of May: International Museum Day.
