Santa Maria del Mar Basilica |
|
The basilica of Santa Maria del Mar is the only important gothic Catalan church that has been entirely finished, and it is the favourite church of the Barcelonese people. Its main characteristics are its many horizontal lines and its large sober spaces. Santa Maria del Mar, patroness of sailors, was built in the 14th century, in only 55 years time, a record which made its sense of impressive unity in style possible both inside and outside the church. The western façade incorporated a rosette of the 15th century representing the coronation of the Virgin. The central nave and the ones on the sides have stained glass windows from the 15th and 18th centuries. The façade consists of two octagonal towers and the props with which the rosette is being held. The light shines through the coloured glass creating a mystic effect. The interior of the temple is spacious and austere; the walls have not been ornamented (except for some parts of the interior chapels) and this special feature makes it one of the most beautiful churches in the city. Another important feature of the Basilica is that it offers some amazing acoustics for live concerts. That's why mainly classic concerts are regularly organised here. To learn more about this church we advise you to read “The cathedral of the sea”, a masterful epic written by Ildefonso Falcones.
