Miró Foundation

Located on the Montjuic hill, the Joan Miró Foundation displays, since 1975, a permanent collection of 14.000 works by the Catalan artist, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings and tapestries. The collection is mainly formed by donations from Miró himself to this institution, as well as by works donated by family and friends. In the same space, they offer interesting temporary exhibitions that promote contemporary and avant-garde art.
The building was designed by the architect Josep Lluis Sert, Miro's friend, who succeeded in combining rationalism with the Mediterranean tradition. In 1990 the Sculptures' Garden was opened next to the building, an area surrounded by vegetation where works by Catalan artists, including Miró himself, are exhibited.
Joan Miró was a big fan of the primitive Catalan art and of Gaudi's modernism. Starting from a surrealistic, cubist and naive style he developed a very personal language based on basic colours and shapes that suggest dreamlike situations, often symbolising the moon, the stars, a bird or a woman.
The museum is opened from Tuesday to Saturday from 10h to 19h (October - June) and from Tuesday to Saturday from 10h to 20h (July - September). Thursdays from 10h to 21h30. Sundays and public holidays from 10h to 14h30. It is Closed on Mondays (except public holidays).
