The Latina area is an attractive and often ignored part of old Madrid. In this area are the origins of Madrid. Known as the multicultural center of Madrid, La Latina and Lavapiés burst at the seams with international restaurants, bars, and cafes. Less frequented than Sol or Plaza Mayor areas, in these districts are a few locals to go to drink and eat before heading out to enjoy more popular nightlife in other quarters. The street Cava Baja nearby has excellent restaurants, not only the world famous Lucio, but also other fashionable bars. Look out for the calle Almendro and the famous tavern with the same name. There are so many places to visit in La Latina. Plaza e Iglesia de San Andrés is located at the South- West end of Cava Baja, at the top of Carrera de San Francisco. It was often visited by San Isidro and Santa María de la Cabeza. Just north of this square, is the Plaza de la Paja. It was the commercial center of the Middle Ages. Nowadays, this square is full of vegetarian restaurants and nice cafes. Another important place to visit is Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, from San Andres´s Square, look down Carrera de San Francisco. Some restaurants we recommend are: -El Arrozal: located in Calle Segovia, it is a famous rice restaurant known for its excellent paella -Casa Lucio: one of the most famous restaurants of Madrid. It is known for its scrambled eggs -Tapas on Cava Baja: Cava Baja is one of the most famous streets in Madrid for tapas and drinks. -La solea: located in Cava Baja, it is a famous flamenco venue.
