Sarrià neighborhood

The pretty neighborhood Sarrià is part of Barcelona’s fifth district, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. It was the last of the independent villages until 1921, after which it was annexed to Barcelona. It became the city’s new uptown area, not only for its geographical location but also for its more posh homes, shops and restaurants. With its streets, buildings and local community, the neighborhood also retains the traditional flavor and personality of the bygone years. A walk through Sarrià is always a great experience, which brings you back into contact with the past.

The locals proudly show off their neighborhood which has always been one of the city’s most prosperous  and wealthiest neighborhoods. This former rural village became the place where Barcelona’s affluent classes chose to live from the second half of the 19th century, because of its unique natural conditions, comprising green areas and springs. If you are standing at the top of Muntaner Street looking down, it is easy to understand why people would want to live there. With many parks and green areas it is far quieter than in central Barcelona. This is a largely residential area but its serenity and local feel is perfect for those looking for a peaceful and authentic experience in Barcelona. There are also lots of great cafés and patisseries as well as the city’s most famous patatas bravas bar.

One of the main attractions in Sarrià is the mountain of Tibidabo, with its amazing views and iconic church. The mountain stands 550 metres in height and the views are legendary. On a clear day you can see across to the Pyrenees and even Mallorca. The church of the Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart) crowning its peak has become one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks and can be seen for miles around. There huge statue of Christ which is enduringly popular with tourists – many visitors come every weekend to take in its beauty and the surrounding panoramas. There is also a bar worth checking out for its spectacular views an it is  called Mirablau. It combines the best atmosphere, excellent Mediterranean-inspired dishes and delicious cocktails with the best views of the city from the Tibidabo mountain.

Another popular place in Sarrià is the wonderful natural science museum CosmoCaixa. A place where man meet science. The first thing you see while entering Barcelona’s natural technical museum Cosmocaixa is a 300 year old giant Acariquara tree extending from the bottom to the top floor of this beautiful science center. In 2006 CosmoCaixa  was selected to Europe’s best museum.
The science center’s facilities include the planetarium, a spectacular tropical rainforest and exhibitions of human nature and evolution of the earth and the universe. We highly reccomend the museum. Both adults and children can have fun in this modern and playful museum.

If you’re looking for a relaxing break in the Catalan capital and you decide to stay in the northern neighborhood of Sarrià, you won’t be disappointed! It is quaint, quiet and a world away from the busy city centre!
