sants-barcelona

Sants-Montjuïc is one of the ten districts in Barcelona. It is located in the southern end of the city and represents almost one fifth of its territory. That is because the hill Montjuïc and the industrial polygon Zona Franca are also included in its borders. The Sants-Montjuïc district is divided into 8 smaller sub-neighborhoods: Sants, Sants-Badal, La Bordeta, La Font de la Guatlla,Hostafrancs,La Marina de Port, La Marina del Prat Vermell, El Poble Sec plus Montjuïc and Zona Franca which are not residential. If you look at a map of Barcelona, the Sants-Montjuïc is on the left side, west of the Old Town and Las Ramblas.

All in all, it is a quiet, mostly residential area, out of the crowds in the centre but easily accessible to all Barcelona has to offer. It’s a good choice for the traveler who wants to be where the locals live, and for families and group of friends that want to relax and enjoy a good walk.

The main attraction in the district is the hill of Montjuïc, nearly 700 feet above the port, with 17th century castle on the top of the hill. From there you can get very powerful panorama views of the town and the Mediterranean sea. There are many attractions on Montjuïc that you can see.

The Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc (Olympic Stadium)is also located there. It was originally built for the 1936 Olympics but they were cancelled at the start of the Civil War. The building was renovated for the Olympics in 1992. Nearby is Palau Sant Jordi where some concerts and events are held during the year. You should also not miss to visit the Fundació Joan Miró museum that exhibits a large selection of the works of Miró. Together with Salvador Dali, Joan Miró is one of the most important figures of the surrealist movement. On the top of Montjuïc is located the MNAC – Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya(National Museum of Catalan Art),which is another important museum. It is housed in Palau Nacional, a 1929 landmark that stands out against the Barcelona skyline. The museum can be reached by elevators or on foot.

The Font Màgica(Magic Fountains), a beautiful huge fountain built for the 1929 World Exposition, sits below the MNAC. The fountain was built in 1929 and it is still one of the most famous attractions in Barcelona. You will experience a real magic with this beautiful show of water arrangements, sound and lighting.A mix of all these elements together in just the right combinations, end up with pure magic!

If you would like to go shopping there is a shopping mall just next to plaza Espanya. It is called Las Arenas.Behind the shopping mall is Parc de l’Escorxador (also known as Parc Joan Miró), which becomes a busy socializing point in the late afternoons , where many people come to walk their dogs and spend time with their kids.

In terms of transportation Sants-Montjuïc is very well connected with the other parts of the town by Metro. Additionally Barcelona Nord Station is located in the neighborhood where you can catch trains to the other parts of Spain.
