The Sagrada Familia

If one, single thing characterizes Barcelona, it is the distinctive modernist architecture, a movement started near the end of the 19th century. Its greatest messenger to the world was Antoni Gaudí, the architect now known for buildings such as Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera) and other structures, all lush sensory experiences.

Gaudí´s talent culminated in the design that now defines Sagrada Familia. Though the project originally started with another architect in 1882, Gaudí was brought on in 1883. He went on to dedicate his life to the project until his death in 1926, even living on the Cathedral grounds the last several years. Since 1952, many other architects have been assigned to help continue the project keeping Gaudí´s original vision in mind, with an immense amount of help from individual and corporate donations. The project, still unfinished, was scheduled to be completed in 2026, but because of the Pandemic, the process was delayed. Now, it is said that the construction will finish in 2030. However, last December, a 5-ton glass star was incorporated into one of the towers, which now illuminates the city of Barcelona at night.

In 2012, Pope Benedict consecrated the church as a basilica and in 2012, the Sagrada Familia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church is undoubtedly a very popular tourist attraction, where millions of tourists stroll, visit and have their pictures taken next to the magnificent work of Antoni Gaudí. Visitors can access the Nave, Crypt, Museum, Shop, and the Passion and Nativity towers.

The Sagrada Familia is located in Carrer de Mallorca 401, in the neighborhood of Eixample. You can buy your tickets there or online, and you will find out information about prices, opening hours and more on their website.
