EU nationals are entitled to make use of the Spanish state health service, provided they have an E111 form or the new EU electronic social security card. For short-term visitors however it’s usually simpler to take out private travel insurance before departure, especially in non-emergency cases. This will also normally cover you for stolen or lost cash or valuables as well as medical costs. For visitors from non-EU countries emergency treatment will be given (not necessarily for free), but it is a good idea to have some kind of medical insurance. In a medical emergency, it is best to go to the casualty department (“urgencies”) of any of the main hospitals.
