An exciting and unique opportunity is available this year at the Prado National Museum in Madrid. An exchange program set up between the Russian and Spanish museums means that the Spanish public will now have an opportunity to explore the collections of the St Petersburg State Museum.

The exhibition consists of 170 itms from the Hermitage Museum in Russia which includes many artistic and historical artifacts. There are archeological items, decorative pieces of art, paintings, drawings and sculptures some of which date from the 5th Century BC. The St Petersburg Hermitage Museum is one of the biggest museums found anywhere in the world and to have the collection available in Madrid is certainly a rare opportunity.

Some world famous pieces of art will be on display as part of the collection. These include Titian’s ‘St. Sebastian,’ Caravaggio’s ‘Lute Player,’ Ribera’s ‘St. Sebastian’ and Velazquez’s ‘Peasants at Table’. Rembrandt’s ‘Portrait of a Scholar’ and ‘Haman Recognizes his Fate’ which will also be present. There will be sculptures from Bernini and Antonio Canova, drawings from Durer, Ingres and Rubens and even works from the impressionists Gauguin, Monet and Cézanne. Picasso and Kandinsky are also represented in the exhibition.

Anyone who appreciates historical and archaeological artifacts or works of art will enjoy this exhibition. It will run until March next year at the Prado National Museum. It is a rare peek into one the largest museums of the world and an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
